Code of Conduct

To ensure the maximum opportunity for students to benefit from their orchestra experience the BYO encourages an environment that promotes self-control and empathy towards and respect for others. Disruptive behavior is not tolerated. In aid of this, the following guidelines should be read and signed by both parent and orchestra member. If an orchestra member fails to abide by these rules he or she may be asked to leave the orchestra.

Orchestra members will be expected to:

  • Arrive at rehearsals 15 minutes early to set up. Tardiness or unexcused absences are not allowed.
  • Pay attention, even when your section is not rehearsing something at that moment. Part of the task of playing in an orchestra is learning how other parts fit in with yours!
  • Turn off all electronic devices that make noise (cell phones, watches, etc.)
  • Not talk, chew gum, or eat during rehearsal time.
  • Behave safely and respectfully at Laney College, or in any other facility that the orchestra is using. This means no playing in or on elevators, stairs, or bathrooms, running in the building, or other similar disruptive behavior.
  • Exercise self-control during rehearsals, breaks, concerts, etc. This means not disturbing other musicians.
  • Listen to, be respectful of, and follow the directions of adults in charge.
  • Be considerate of the feelings of others. BYO does not tolerate teasing or making fun of others.
  • Not fight or engage in aggressive or provocative behavior.
  • Speak to and listen respectfully to peers and adults.
  • Use appropriate language during rehearsals, concerts, breaks, and other times when representing the BYO. Inappropriate comments or sounds during concerts or rehearsals are cause for dismissal.

Resolution:

  • Behavior is brought to the attention of the orchestra member.
  • If appropriate, resolution is encouraged between orchestra members facilitated by an adult in charge.
  • If necessary the behavior will be brought to the attention of the orchestra member’s parents.
  • If there is continued problematic behavior the orchestra member will be asked to leave the orchestra
