At the Podium
Jay grew up in Marin County and now resides in the East Bay. Jay received a Bachelor’s Degree and Lifetime Teaching Credential from the University of California, Davis, and a Master’s Degree in Trumpet Performance from California State University at Hayward. He taught high school for 20 years in Richmond and Danville, and his instrumental performance groups have won awards throughout the state, including two first place performances at the Monterey Jazz Festival. Currently the Chairman of the Music Department at Laney College, Jay teaches music theory and conducts various instrumental ensembles. Recipient of a Golden Bell Award for Outstanding Teaching in the State of California as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award from the PTA, Lehmann was selected as the 1999 Laney College Teacher of the Year. Jay recently received a 2007 Outstanding Achievement Award for teaching from Laney College. At BYO, Jay develops and oversees our music program, directs the music staff, and serves as our concert conductor.
Al has been a drummer, vibist, composer, bandleader and musician for over 40 years, as well as arts manager and executive director of arts organizations, festivals and schools for 30 years. Al served as Executive Director and Manager of Grants Programs for the Musicians Association, AFM, the Prince George's Arts Council in Maryland and Washington, D.C., for 12 years, and as CEO of California Local Arts Agencies from 2000 to 2006. Al has won the national Arts Administrator of the Year Award and received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, California Arts Council, and Harvard University Atlas Program. Al completed his undergraduate studies in Music Performance, philosophy and arts education at Dick Grove Music School in Studio City, American University, Washington, D.C., and American University Graduate School. He received a Master of Arts in Performing Arts: Arts Management and was awarded the Jefferson Cup for Outstanding Thesis in the Graduate School of Arts and Humanities in 1995.
Kate completed a Master’s degree in Orchestral Conducting at McGill University (Montreal, Canada) in 2004. A native of Vermont, she completed undergraduate work in Bassoon Performance and Music Theory (also at McGill) and obtained a B. Mus in June of 2002. As a guest conductor, Kate has worked with the McGill Symphony Orchestra, the Savoy Society of Montreal, and L'Harmonie nationale des jeunes du Canada. As a bassoonist, she has focused on new music, performing at UC Berkeley's Center for New Music and Audio Technologies (CNMAT) and previously with The Group of the Electronic Music Studio and Montreal's Ensemble KORE. At BYO, Kate serves as our Orchestra Manager, our first point of contact with members and families, as our assistant conductor, and as woodwind coach during sectionals.
