Nancy Boyles

Artist in Residence

Nancy Boyles began her flute studies when she was 9 years old, and holds a BA and MA in flute performance. She played in youth orchestras throughout her childhood, and also enjoyed exploring music of other cultures, particularly music that emphasizes improvisation, including Latin, Rock, Funk and Jazz. Her father was a jazz bassist, and Nancy embraces all genres of music as a result. She has been Jazz Director at Martin Luther King Middle School in Berkeley for the last 17 years, along with teaching concert band, woodwinds, percussion and brass for Berkeley Unified School District since 2004. This is her first year as a wind coach for the BYO.

Nancy’s public school and private students have gone on to attend some of the top music institutions in the country, including Juilliard, Harvard, USC, San Francisco Conservatory, Oberlin, and Frost School of Music. She has performed in the Bay Area in many musical settings, but considers her teaching to have made the greatest impact. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family, raising Monarch butterflies, and enjoying time outdoors.
