BYO Honors Great African-American Composers

This season BYO is honoring the contributions of four African-American composers who were leading innovators of their time, even if, in some cases, the country and world didn't realize it until years later. Today, our young musicians will begin rehearsing online in real-time using BYO's private Jamulus servers named to honor Scott Joplin, William Grant Still, Florence Price, and George Walker. Their contributions to American and international music are exceptional and we hope that you'll take some time to learn about these composers and listen to some of their works.

Joplin - Maple Leaf Rag (1899)

Grant Still - Afro-American Symphony no. 1 (1930)

Florence Price - Violin Concerto No. 2 (1952)

Walker - Lyric for Strings (1946)
